Apache Resident Hunts Bigfoot

Training with the Afghan National Army (ANA) continues but we are more observers than instructors. This is the way it should be. Presently, our company of ANA is stationed up north with a company of Americans without any Operational Mentoring Liaison Team (OMLT) representatives. That we haven’t been called out there and they haven’t started shooting each other by now is a sure sign of success.

I also would not allow my 4 year-old grand daughter to swim in certain neighbors’ pools where diapered tots were present. As expected, she was not happy; but since we have our own professionally cleaned pool (and no tots in diapers) plus a ready supply of popsicles and pool toys, the older kids were happy to swim at my house. Convincing the moms with babies not to come was not so easy, but usually they stayed home.

What was an open compound had been divided into a still rather open ANA vehicle patrol base and an OLMT fortress. Our little fortress takes up about two fifths of the entire compound. There even was a gate separating us from the ANA soldiers. The first time I saw it I was shocked. It was hard for me to fathom why mentors would need a fortress nor why we needed so many soldiers (There were six to eight Latvian soldiers there with myself and an interpreter).

One of the first things I noticed was that contrary to other reports, lights would reflect off of the gravestones. Although many are old and weathered, finely polished granite does not lose its reflectivity easily. Many gravestones produced a reflection. I caught myself getting excited about a light in the corner of my eye only for it to turn out to be a reflection. Even though there are only a few houses and buildings that make up the town, and they are a mile away or more, reflections of their lights could clearly be seen. The graveyard is still being used, so not all of the gravestones are old. In fact, you can get a great deal on a plot. Over time I began remembering the locations of the shiny gravestones, so that I would not make the mistake again.

We don’t know what is yet to come from the future generation. We don’t know how much the affluent few will be willing to pay for the design of future phones. Either luxury or technology itself will make future phones more expensive. This is indeed a very lucrative business to dive for when you’re in dire need of money-if and only if your design passes the taste of the affluent 1% of the population.
